Sombre Arnold Schwarzenegger spends Father's Day with son Christopher... as upbeat Maria Shriver enjoys shopping trip

Sombre: Arnold Schwarzenegger spent his first Father's Day since splitting from wife Maria Shriver, by having lunch with his youngest son Christopher

Arnold Schwarzenegger spent a quiet Father's Day with his youngest son Christopher, while estranged wife Maria Shriver distracted herself from the family's troubles by shopping for antiques.

Schwarzenegger, 63, appeared sombre as he ventured out for his first Father's Day since splitting with Maria, his wife of 25 years.

Casually dressed in jeans and a green T-shirt with 'Army' written on it, the former California Governor was spotted leaving a restaurant in Malibu, California today with son Christopher, 13, by his side.

While the revelation that the Terminator actor fathered a love child with former employee Mildred Baena has wreaked havoc on his family, it appears that he is trying to maintain his relationship with his children.

But it is unlikely that the actor-turned-politician will be able to mend the rift with his estranged wife.

Maria, 55, spent the weekend taking in a bit of shopping and spending time with Christopher as well.

Focusing on his son: Arnold and 13-year-old Christopher, who is the same age as his love child, enjoyed lunch together

Dressed in grey workout pants and a white vest top, the make-up free mother-of-four appeared to be in good spirits as she stopped by Kier Design, an antiques store in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

Once Maria left the store, she was pictured driving around with Christopher sitting in the passenger side of her car.

She was left devastated earlier this year, when she learnt her husband had fathered a child outside of their marriage.

In May, Maria and Schwarzenegger announced their separation.

Now adding to the former California first lady's troubles, last week the mother of Schwarzenegger's love child finally broke her silence.

Mildred, who worked as a housekeeper for the family for 20 years, gave an explosive interview to Hello! Magazine and posed for photos with her 13-year-old son by Schwarzenegger, Joseph Baena.

The mother and son had been in hiding since the shocking news of Mildred's affair with the married star went public.

Mildred spoke in detail about the the moment that Arnold's wife Maria discovered the sordid secret she had kept for almost 14 years.

'Maria did ask me directly if Joseph was Arnold's son and I just broke down,' Guatemala-born Mildred said.

'I dropped to my knees and I was crying, saying that, yes, he was and I was so sorry.'

In her first interview, with Hello! magazine, Mildred reveals: 'She was so strong. She cried with me and told me to get off my knees.

'We held each other and I told her it wasn't Arnold's fault, that it takes two. That is what I admired about her, her strength and the way she handled it.'

Baena sets the record straight, telling the magazine that she and Arnold had only a handful of encounters - not a lengthy affair - and that the former Californian Governor, 63, only learned that Joseph was his son recently.

She believes suspicions were raised when she brought the 13-year-old over to the Schwarzenegger's home last summer after a long absence.
