But French President Nicolas Sarkozy appears to have let his normally sharp appearance slide a little too much during his summer break.
The 55-year-old Frenchman was sporting a scruffy stubbly beard as he made his first public appearance since taking some time out in the French Riviera at Carla's family residence on Cap Nègre.
Dressed down in jeans, he also appeared to have got a little hot under the collar, with what seemed to be sweat patches on his chest.
Nicolas is planning a three week break with Carla, who wore a colour co-ordinated white shirt and jeans as they posed with locals while taking a stroll together.
Besides his far-from-smart appearance, the holiday has at least given Sarkozy the chance to top up his tan and he looked particularly bronzed yesterday.

She was also pictured laughing heartily, perhaps at one of her other half's jokes.
Or maybe she was even poking fun at his gruff facial hair.
