Koh Rang Yai: Perfectly Placed For Pedal Power

By Youthapong Charoenpan

Enjoying an idyllic setting on the island of Koh Rang Yai, just a short boat ride from Phuket’s east coast, Rang Yai Island Resort benefits from a privileged position.

While guests can enjoy a good deal of peace and privacy during their stay at the resort, there are also plenty of activities available, such as canoeing, cycling and hiking.

The trip to the island by speedboat from Laem Hin Pier only takes about 10 minutes, while the pier is located about 20 minutes away from Phuket International Airport. If you're not in a real hurry, you can make the same journey by longtail boat, which takes about 30 minutes. The resort is located right next to a splendid stretch of beach, which is fringed by numerous coconut trees.

pectacular Seascapes
One striking aspect of a visit to the resort is its superb position on the east side of the island. This allows visitors to enjoy an excellent view of Phuket’s eastern coastline, as well as a vista that includes the stunning limestone cliffs of nearby Phang Nga province, which attract hordes of climbing enthusiasts from around the world.

The resort’s eight exclusive, but fairly basic bungalows are based just a matter of meters away from the beach. During a recent visit, my companion and I spent two nights in a bungalow called Rim Lay 7, which is so close to the beach that when the tide is at its highest (late in the evening), you can hear the waves gently lapping nearby.

The resort's location also means that guests have plenty of opportunities to go swimming or snorkeling. Based on our experience, it seems that as well as receiving a large number of guests who stay overnight at the resort, the island also receives a steady flow of day trippers.

Easy to Explore
Since the island is so tiny, it's really easy to explore on a bicycle. Within 30 minutes, you'll be able to see a good deal of the island, so I would thoroughly recommend this method of transport for getting around. Staying at the resort offers great value, too, since guests can make use its bicycles or snorkeling gear for free.

In the morning, you can choose between an Asian-style breakfast of rice soup, or a full American Breakfast, if you prefer. This is included in the overall cost of your accommodation.

The Thai food options listed on the restaurant's menu are mainly Southern-style dishes. I would personally recommend the Gaeng Khiew Wan Gai ('Green chicken curry' with eggplant and coconut), which was absolutely delicious.

It's worth noting that the resort functions remarkably well as a venue for hosting a banquet or party on a special occasion, such as a wedding reception, an anniversary celebration, or for various kinds of events that are typically organized by corporate groups, such as 'teambuilding' breaks. The resort also organizes trips to other islands located nearby, if you wish to explore the area in greater depth.

While Koh Rang Yai is still not widely known, this is also one of its key selling points since it provides many visitors to Phuket with a rather quieter and gentler experience without having to venture too far away. From this perspective, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Rang Yai Island Resort as the pristine beach and the resort's impressive facilities provide plenty of options, whether you're seeking entertainment or simply looking for some rest and relaxation.
