Starlin Castro, who just turned 21 a couple weeks ago, is the youngest player on any major league roster. He aslo happens to lead the league in hits with 21. He became the Cubs best player when he was brought up from AAA last season, but no one outside of Cubs fans were paying attention.
But now its time for him to get some praise. I mean not only does he lead the majors in hits but he also leads the league in multiple hit games and is tied for the lead in triples. He is 3rd in runs scored and 11th in total bases.
Castro recently told a beat writer that he plans on stealing 20-30 bases this season. If this becomes a reality, we may be looking at Derek Jeter or Jimmy Rollins type player. There aren't too many SS in the league that can hit .320 and have double digit homers and steals.
But the thing is no one really knows how good Starlin can be. That's because the other prospects his age are developing in AA right now. Its just too early to say what he could become. Castro could start hitting for more power and be Hanley Ramirez. Or maybe he fizzles out and becomes Shawon Dunston. Just saying.
Can I get a Castr-o-meter?
