Financial drain: The pebble beach offers 'breathtaking views' across the West Dorset coast but doesn't make the council any money
If you thought owning your own private beach was reserved for oligarchs and media tycoons, think again. West Dorset District Council has put Eype Beach near Bridport up for sale for a mere £1.
The beach is part of Dorset’s world-famous Jurassic Coast but it doesn’t generate any income and costs too much money to maintain, according to the council.
A council spokesperson said: ‘Eype Beach does not provide an income to the council but the property does have associated management costs and legal liabilities.
‘There is no reason why the council should continue to own it and recommends that it is sold.’
The council said that the low price reflected the beach's 'low asset value' but warned prospective buyers that the price could go up.
‘The lack of income generated by the beach accounts for the low asset value recorded in the report. However, this is not an indication of what a buyer may pay for the property’, the spokesman explained.
‘The council has an obligation to its taxpayers to get the best return it can from its assets and the capital obtained from the sale of property pays for the capital investments that the council makes into the local community’.
The council’s website described the beach as a ‘steeply shelving pebble beach located three miles from Bridport’, where it says walkers can ‘enjoy breathtaking views across the West Dorset coast’.
West Dorset District Council has put a series of properties up for sale, and hopes to raise £1.5 million in total.
