Michael Douglas looking healthier than ever as he braves New York chill

On the mend: the actor has been looking healthier in recent weeks following his gruelling cancer treatment

Actor Michael Douglas has been looking a lot better in recent weeks, after undergoing months of gruelling treatment for throat cancer.

And there were further indications on Thursday that the Oscar winning actor may be on the mend, when he chose to brave the elements of a New York winter.

The 66-year-old bundled up against the freezing 30 degree temperatures in the Big Apple as he popped out to a drug store on the West Side.

And in fact many people may not even have realised it was him since he was wrapped up warm in a bulky black coat, black woolly hat and dark glasses.

The actor - most recently seen on screen in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps - had been left frail and gaunt by his illness and the treatments he has been undergoing.

But his noticeably healthier appearance of late has suggested that he is on the road to recovery.

He looked healthier this week as he travelled to a photoshoot at Pier 59 Studios in New York.

And last month the veteran actor celebrated Thanksgiving in Florida with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their children Dylan, 10, and seven-year-old Carys.

The family visited Disney World in Florida as well as enjoying a magical day out at The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort.

Douglas recently revealed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter - his first since undergoing treatment - that he will learn in January if the cancer has been eliminated. Doctors have told him this type of cancer has an 80 per cent cure rate.

‘It certainly has put a little perspective on mortality, obviously,’ he said.

But as I looked through the stats, I didn’t think of this as life and death, I just saw it as an illness to get over.

‘So I didn’t dig into the bottom of my soul to see what I could see.

'The level of chemo, the amount they’re giving you, combined with radiation, was the max they could do in that period of time. It’s amazing that they almost have to try and kill you to bring you back.’

A further sign that Douglas is recovering came when he announced his return to work recently, playing flamboyant pianist Liberace in a biopic set to film next summer.
